From the past to the future

In the beginning …

An idea was born

August Schanz is often accredited as being the originator of the steel door frame, who wanted to replace the wooden door frame with a more robust and cost effective building element. Opportunity 'knocked on his door' in the early 1920's when Ernst May, a town planner for Frankfurt, asked his company to manufacture frames for the city's projects. From this time onwards, steel door frames became the default specification for all schools, hospitals and public buildings in Germany and many other parts of Europe.

The early OHMEN years

In 1967 young locksmith Bernhard Ohmen founded the BOS OHMEN GmbH and started his success story with the production of stairs, banisters and of course steel frames. After just 5 years, in 1972, the building of our current production site started in Emsdetten-Sinningen. Always focused on innovation and high quality, BOS grew steadily. In 1980 we introduced the powder coated BOS frame, with a high class finish. In the mid-90s our success soared with the invention of the 2 part split frame Duo15Z. Just one year after introduction it was upgraded with the invention of our levelling anchor. Over 10 million levelling anchors have been produced until today.

Expanding worldwide

In 1999 BOS OHMEN GmbH became BOS GmbH Best Of Steel and our focus became part of our name. Three years later, in 2002, we became a proud member of the DOMOFERM Group, Gänserndorf/Austria. With the aid of new contacts from the small network of 4 plants in Germany, Austria and Czech Republic, BOS grew exponentially. The stainless steel department had a large expansion in 2005 and in 2006 we started our project of roofing nearly the whole outdoor area of our company. No steel frames get wet or dirty from the weather anymore. Between 2010 and 2016 we were able to achieve high upgrades in our plant with the installation of highly flexible powder coating machinery, Trumpf laser plants and cutting machines.

Our key to success

Even more important than the machinery was the steady investment in the BOS employees. Never losing the focus on customized solutions, we were able to create an Architect Consulting Service in 2002. The new information, right from the planner, helped us to find answers for questions in the early stages of projects. Our high level of well-trained employees in customer service and production, combined with our flexible machinery enables us to date a high output of standardized steel frames as well as high quality man-made solutions such as the disassembled sliding door steel frame LineaSet or the Duplex double door steel frame. Winning the red dot design award in 2012 for our CasePlus Design steel frame has been a confirmation of our success.

What’s coming next

In 2017 BOS GmbH and our sister company in Brilon BBE DOMOFERM Germany celebrated their 50 year company anniversary. Celebrating with over 450 employees in Emsdetten and customers worldwide, we were able to open our brand new warehouse extension. The icing on the cake is that in 2018 the whole DOMOFERM Group then became part of the globally active JELD-WEN Group, which has opened totally new paths of action for both us and our beloved customers.

Here and now

Where we are today? Putting the customer first has been the focus for BOS consistently since 1967. Flexibility in the way we produce our steel frames remains a cornerstone of our business, along with reliability and punctuality. Today we are proud to be the market leader for customized steel frames in Germany and many other European countries.

We have six sales teams to help our customers: Germany North, South and East, Key accounts, Export and Material storage. The versatile export team of ten responds promptly to steel frame enquiries. Each team member manages enquiries, quotations, technical clarification, AutoCAD drawings, order processing and shipping on behalf of our customers. Our team members enjoy a high level of autonomy, allowing the shortest possible decision routes and prompt advice where needed. There is one point of contact to answer most of the questions, by telephone, skype or e-mail. The team is supported through visits to customers and project sites by a member of the team or our sales representative in the UK, Matthew Jones.

Knowledge is our key to customer satisfaction

Our customers benefit from our long experience in the successful handling of steel frame and steel door projects worldwide. With our own fleet of 11 lorries and specially trained forwarding agents, up to 25 trucks and oversea containers leave the factory every day. BOS Best Of Steel offers daily shuttles to the UK, the Netherlands and Switzerland. As an AEO C certified company, we are able to support you in any way with customs declarations, declarations of origin and other tax and customs related questions. As all our steel frames, stainless steel frames and steel doors are made in our own facilities inside the European Union, most of our customers outside the European Union make use of preferential customs tariffs.

It isn’t only our customers who benefit from our wealth of knowledge. Architects and designers are supported by our Architect Consulting Service. We support architects working on projects, early in the planning phase, to find the best solutions. Close cooperation and correct specification at an early stage makes the later implementation of our frames in projects for schools, hospitals, hotels or businesses much easier for all concerned.

The 'Best Of' promise

To ensure our own Best Of Steel quality standard, all our employees are highly qualified and regularly trained. Workshops, personal development and TVP (daily improvement process) are part of daily life, with improved customer satisfaction as the goal. The process covers all employees, not only in customer support but also in sales and production. The Integrated Management System is continually being optimized according to DIN EN ISO 9001:2008 (Quality), DIN EN 14001:2009 (Environment), DIN EN ISO 50001 (Energy) and OHSAS 18001:2007 (Industrial Safety). Our manufacturing processes are independently assessed at regular intervals by external institutions - MPA Dortmund, BAM, ift, Intertek, providing an extra layer of assurance for frames which are part of ‘life and asset saving’ fire protection doorsets.

The future …

BOS frames not only bring efficiency to the building process, many of our products create outstanding designs that can only be achieved successfully in steel.

Showing the way in doorsets

Door frames with integrated shadow gaps, door frames finished flush with the wall and frames without architraves to name a few. Interior glazing or windows are increasing in popularity as more buildings are fitted out with stud wall construction.
